Robert Ballard graduated from UCSB in 1965 with degrees in Geology and Chemistry. He was also commissioned at that time by the ROTC Program as an officer in the US ARMY. He has gone on to earn doctoral degrees in Marine Geology and Geophysics. He is now the world's foremost Oceanographer best know for his 1986 discovery of the Titanic and other world famous deep sea wrecks. This scholarship is awarded annually to an ROTC cadet excelling in Math, Engineering or the Sciences.
