Dr. Robert Ballard is one of the world's leading marine geologists. He has documented many of the largely unexplored reaches of the deep ocean.

He has also been instrumental in the development of the new underwater exploration, technology including the Argo/Jason system that was used to find the Titanic.

He was invited to UCSB in December 2001 to receive the ROTC Prestigious Alumni Award. This award is in rocognition of services to his country examplifing the values and traditions of the ROTC program.

On 22 Feb 02 several UCSB ROTC Cadets and Cadre were given the honor to meet with and listen to a speech given by the Secretary of the Army, The Honorable Thomas E. White. During his speech the secretary covered numerous topics ranging from his involvement with Enron, to the War on Terrorism. A major theme of the Secretary's oration was the ongoing transformation of the Army and its place in the future of warfare. This was a topic of much interest to the cadets owing to the fact that they will soon become leaders within this new lighter and mightier force structure. The Secretary also discussed his ongoing initiative to ensure that every soldier's Basic Allowance for Housing is adequate enough to cover all of his or her living expenses. He further promised to have the issue fixed by 2005. Following the Secretary's speech, UCSB cadets were afforded a picture with the Secretary, and MS IV Cadet Karyna Velasquez was awarded a Secretary of the Army Coin of Excellence.
