Captain Dion Joseph Burmaz was born on October 5, 1976, and enrolled at UCSB from Placentia, CA. He joined the UCSB ROTC program on September 1, 1994 and graduated UCSB with a degree in Criminal Justice. He was commissioned as a 2LT in the United States Army on June 13, 1998. He then completed the Officer Basic Course at Fort Rucker, Alabama graduating as an Army Aviator in August of 1999. His first assignment was with 3rd Battalion (ATK), 229th Aviation Regiment at Fort Bragg where he served as an Attack Helicopter Platoon Leader and Class III/V Platoon Leader. His next assignment was as Company Commander of D Co., 1st Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. In May of 2004 he took over as the Company Commander of A Co., 1st Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Page, Republic of Korea. CPT Burmaz served with courage and distinction as both a Company Commander and AH-64D Apache Longbow Pilot. On February 26, 2005, Razorback “6” took off on his final mission. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Airborne Badge and the Army Service Ribbon.
